HISTORY:
Makoto and Keiko Tanaka were both raised in traditional Japanese families on the West Coast. While their marriage was not arranged per se, their families pushed them together as much as possible. Despite the urging of both sets of parents, they put off having children until Makoto finished his medical internship. To his disappointment but Keiko's great pleasure, their first child was a girl - Hana.

Growing up, Hana picked up reading quickly and has a book in her hand almost constantly since. By contrast, she took longer than expected to begin speaking ad for a brief time her parents became concerned that she may have been deaf. To this day, she is a girl of few words, not one for small talk normally unless she really likes the person.

Once she reached school age, she impressed her teachers, several of whom wanted to skip her ahead. However, her father refused to allow this, insisting that she could not be that smart. Hana spent her years up to high school trying to impress him, studying harder and longer than she needed. As she entered her sophomore year, she has finally given up attempting to make him realize his error and relaxed her study habits.

A male cousin introduced Hana to science fiction movies when she was twelve. She makes an effort to see every sci-fi movie she can and has managed to sneak off to one convention. Her taste tends to run the gamut from hard science fiction, like Poul Anderson and Arthur C. Clarke, to space opera, like Star Wars.

APPEARANCE:
Hana's Japanese heritage is obvious to anyone that looks at her. She stands about 5'3" and has long black hair and dark brown eyes. Even with little exercise, she manages to keep a slender frame. Her makeup tends towards the minimal, usually limited to only lip gloss and clear nail polish. For jewelry, she has a small silver stud in each ear and a variety of necklaces, chosen each day to go with her mood.
